Sign on the trail thru the old Fort Ord firing range to the beach. I almost always take pictures of signs like this because it is an easy way to save info, but I rarely post them. On this one, however, I like the images they included.
While Fort Ord was being closed and for a short time after, I was an alternate on the Fort Ord design and re-use committee. It was very interesting; I attended a few meetings and was given a mountain (or would it be a sand dune?) of stuff to read, plus I use to read the news paper daily and there were many articles about Fort Ord. I remember the area of the firing range being discussed and reading a report about dunes restoration in that area. Initially, it was doubtful that this area would ever be open to the public because of all the lead in the sand from bullets. It was deemed unsafe. The cost of clean-up and restoration was estimated around $10 million. Much of this coastal area is closed to the public now. However, it is wonderful that the bike path runs along Hwy 1 at this point and that they have created trails from the bike path to the ocean allowing people to view this amazing place.
