El Jay and I arrived safely back in ABQ just before 1am....
The ceiling of the dome (or simplified, simply the dome) in the South dome..... Or The South Dome of the Cinedome..... lol. Was that better?
I can't figure out why there are orbs in this, but I liked them. I was hand holding the camera in a semi darkened theatre and knowing a flash would do little good, I thought I had turned it off. There was one major light source from an opened exit door to my right and ambient light from the two lobby entrances, to my left and across.the theatre to the left.... I know that orbs can generally be explained away, but in this case... I'd like to think the Cinedome 70 was full of the spirits of happy patrons and wonderful films that played there, simply saying their own good bye... or.... welcoming it to the other side.
In February 1970 Uncle Sam sent my dad to Hill Air Force Base to help install some guidance related missile part and then to train the people there how to use it....I turned 8 in March. We didn't live far from the CInedome and over the next 3-months we watched as they finished building the Cinedome 70.... and as it was opened. I remember asking if they would have to rename it Cinedome 71 and then 72 and 73 and onward.... (It was explained to me the the 70 stood for a type/size of film....) I couldn't let go of it needing to be Cinedome 71 in less than year. I remember thinking how far away just "80" would be.... I never thought as far ahead as 2010.
We were only going to be in Utah for three months, but that stay was lengthened a month or two at a time for three years. from there my dad's job took us to Cheyenne, WY for a year and finally back to Orange County, Cal.
Later shortly after I turned 18 in 1980 my dad was again sent to Hill. This time he was the systems analysis manager over the avionics software on the F-16....I had about 3-months before I would graduate from high school. I could have stayed in California, but I was bored and made the move with my parents. Plus school would get out sooner in Utah; so, 9-weeks later I graduated from Roy High School. It was like being a foreign exchange student. Really, I was from a very foreign place compared to Roy, UT. For the next 4-years, while attended Weber, I regularly saw movies at the Cinedom....
As I was leaving yesterday, getting on the freeway, I drove past this magnificent Lady one last time. I was grateful they had not started tearing her down (for a stupid car lot no less), so I could at least still picture her in minds eye..... as she once was.
