Old photos

I really didn't make very many images while in Utah. Another thing my dad enjoys is family history. We spent a little time discussing family history and looking at old pictures. He was really excited to see a few of the old pictures I have been gathering and more excited to use one of those to identify the people in one of his old photos.

This composite is to show the basic steps for doing minimal restoration. My dad has his grandmother's photo album, which is in horrible condition. I wanted to remove the photographs and scan them, but my dad was too nervous about that (and I don't blame him.) Instead I used my camera. This approach was far from perfect, partially because I was hand holding the camera and shooting down from above..... The photo on the left shows some of the album page. The right one crops out the page and I have done a small amount of spot healing. This one was in fairly good shape.

I do not know who this man and woman are. The album belonged to my great-grandmother Ariadne Tranquilla Huffacre Gardner (Rae). She was married to Joseph Smith Gardner (Jody). Dad and I both guess they are likely siblings to Rae and Jody. That should narrow it down a little. They both came from old polygamist families--she had about 30 siblings and he had 47.....

My dad asked me if i would help him restore the entire album. My first thought was that it would be hard to fix ripped pages, etc.... Dad however had a more challenging idea. 2/3rds of the original photos are gone. He wants me to put pictures back in the album. Not knowing what was there in about 1885 makes a true restoration impossible. I can, however, go thru my dad's pictures and go from there adding reproductions from that era of other Gardner/Huffacre ancestors.

Teaching gun safety--A family tradition with my dad.

While in Utah El Jay got the privilege of going to the Firing Range with PapaJoe. This was El Jay's first experience shooting. He loved the little 22--just wait until he is big enough to fire the old Sharps Borschardt buffalo rifle. My dad is an NRA and BSA certified instructor.

This was both the craziest and peaceful Spring Break for the boys and me. I was released from the hospital Monday evening. The angiogram showed there was no heart disease. We do not know why one side of my heart is weaker than it should be. I will meet with my doctor in about 10-days. I am on insulin and I've been told I need to lose quite a bit of weight.

On Tuesday afternoon, we left for a road-trip to see my dad. It really felt important to go spend time with him. the doctors said i could go, but I was not to drive or lift anything--because of the angiogram. It was a peaceful stay at my dad's. We talked about my mom and we worked on family photos. I also got to spend time with my three surviving siblings--which was nice.

Grasping for something to post. I am so bored. Not much besides old archived stuff and pictures from mom's funeral.... this was an accidental shot and should be deleted, but.....maybe I could use this for one of my February self portraits.

Another echo was done yesterday. It was interesting to see my heart. I am scheduled for an angiogram on Monday. They aren't telling me much yet. I do know they are looking closely at one of the ventricles. We are also struggling to get my blood sugar down--it has ranged from 310-420 the entire time I've been here. I will leave here taking insulin.

My dad circa 1981. Age 49. A picture/slide I took of my dad on a hike in the Uintahs. That was such a long time ago.

I don't know if I will be able to post or comment for a couple days and the images will be from what I have archived on my laptop. I am at UNM Medical Center waiting to hear from the cardiologist. I was admitted last night to the ER with chest pains and failed a blood test and the stress test /echo. Currently all I know is I will be here for a few days. I had planned to take a roadtrip to Utah over Spring break, instead I get to do this.

Happy Birthday me (on March Fourth)

Jeddy took the picture, but this may be my self portrait of march. Or not.

Jennifer has a cold and didn't join in the festivities. Indigo thinks she may be catching a cold, too. Not fun.
